British society is founded on fundamental values and principles shared by all people living in the UK.
The fundamental principles of British life are: democracy; the rule of law; individual liberty; tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; participation in community life.
These values are reflected in the responsibilities, rights and privileges of being a British citizen or permanent resident.

To apply to become a permanent resident (settlement / indefinite leave to remain) or a British citizen, an applicant must demonstrate knowledge of English and knowledge of life in the UK.
The two requirements are: (1) pass the Life in the UK Test, AND (2) hold an acceptable English language qualification at B1 CEFR level or above (or an equivalent, e.g. an ESOL qualification at that level or a degree taught in English).
Both requirements apply from October 2013 for settlement applications; before that, one route was an ESOL course with citizenship materials.

The Life in the UK Test consists of 24 questions covering all parts of the handbook.
Questions are based on the whole handbook — any chapter or section can be tested.
The test is usually taken in English, but arrangements can be made to take it in Welsh or Scottish Gaelic.
