What happens on test day

Knowing the process removes half the nerves. Here's the day, minute by minute.

Ultima verificare: 15 July 2026

Before you leave home

  • Take the same ID document you booked with and proof of your addressfull list here. Without them you cannot sit the test and you lose the fee.
  • Check your confirmation email for the exact address and time.
  • Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early.

At the centre

  1. Staff check your ID and confirm your booking.
  2. Your photo may be taken and your ID scanned for identity verification.
  3. Phones, bags, watches and notes go into a locker.
  4. You're seated at a computer workstation in a quiet room with other candidates.

The test itself

  • 24 questions, 45 minutes — most people finish in 15–25 minutes. The pass mark is 18 (75%).
  • Question types: single answer, "select TWO", and true/false.
  • You can flag questions and come back to them; a review screen shows anything unanswered before you submit.
  • There's usually a short practice tutorial before the real questions start.

This is exactly the environment our mock simulator reproduces — practising in the same screen layout means nothing on the day feels new.

After you finish

You get your result at the centre the same day. If you pass, you receive a unique reference number — keep it safe; UKVI verifies it digitally in your application. If you don't pass, you can rebook after 7 days (here's the calm version of what to do next).

Test-day FAQ

When do I get my result?

On the day, at the test centre, usually within minutes of finishing. If you pass you receive a unique pass reference used in your settlement or citizenship application.

Can I take my phone in?

No. Phones and personal items are stored in a locker before you enter the test room. Being caught with a phone can void your test.

What if I'm late?

Arrive at least 15 minutes early. If you miss your slot you usually lose the £50 fee and must book again.

Is the test on paper?

No — it's on a computer, one question at a time, with the ability to flag questions and review your answers before submitting. Our mock simulator reproduces this screen.
