ID requirements for the Life in the UK Test
Two things get you into the test room: valid photo ID and proof of your address. Without either, you cannot sit the test and the £50 fee is lost.

Accepted identity documents
- A valid passport (any country), or
- A valid UK biometric residence permit (BRP) or biometric residence card (BRC).
The document must be the one you used when booking, valid (not expired), and the original — no photocopies or photos on your phone.
Proof of address
You also need an original document showing your name and current address, typically dated within the last 3 months — for example a bank statement, utility bill, or council tax letter. The accepted list is maintained on gov.uk and can change; check it there the week before your test.
The golden rule
Booking details = document details. Name spelling, date of birth and document number must match exactly. If anything has changed since booking (new passport, name change), contact the test provider before the day.
Documents sorted? See what happens on test day or get back to practising.
ID FAQ
My passport is expired — can I still use it?
No, your identity document must be valid (not expired) on test day. If your only document has expired, sort that out before booking.
The name on my booking doesn't match my ID exactly.
Contact the test provider through gov.uk before test day. A mismatch between booking and document is one of the most common reasons people are turned away without a refund.
What counts as proof of address?
Typically a recent bank or credit card statement, utility bill (gas, electricity, water), council tax letter or a letter from the Home Office with your address. Check the current list on gov.uk — rules change.
Can I use a photocopy?
No. Original documents only, both for ID and proof of address.
